about

Al Meltzer is a bassist and producer based out of Portland, OR. Al started playing bass at nine years old, falling in love with the instrument. Al played in several bands throughout high school, and also first developed his love for hip hop and beat production. He then continued on to study upright bass with a jazz focus at Arizona State University. While in college, he worked as a freelance bassist and help found a modern jazz group, Nautabot, that released a self titled record in December 2015. After college, he relocated to Portland, OR and quickly found himself playing in bands that include Coco Columbia, Two Planets, and Old Wave. He also costarted his main project, instrumental hip hop duo, Korgy and Bass, alongside drummer Barra Brown with the idea of making a band that improvises using chopped up samples, synthesizers, and live drums. Korgy and Bass has released two EPs on Cavity Search Records entitled EP Vol. 1 and EP Vol. 2.

Al's single, Cactus Trap, is about wanting to escape the musical trap he felt while living in Phoenix; the feeling of being able to make a living playing music, but not progressing as an artist. This is portrayed through the highly syncopated groove, harmonic structure, and exploration of texture. Nautabot members Micah Hummel and Aleksey Izotov assisted with production of the song.
